A Theatre Lover’s Perfect Sunday

Sunday morning we began with a stroll through Central Park.

And since Central Park is massive, we gave in and used a map to find our way.

Being the tourist spot that it is, Strawberry Fields was pretty crowded with Beatles’ fans.  Though everyone was very respectful about waiting their turn to take photos with the Imagine mosaic.

We walked along the West side of the Park heading towards Lincoln Centre

I would have loved to stop for lunch at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, but we were afraid of being late for our show at Lincoln Centre. But there’s always next time! I’ve got my mind set on their Lox Bagel, or perhaps the Arugula Salad with Roasted Figs, Honey, Westfield Farms Goat Cheese, and Bresaola….  Okay, focus!

We made it to Lincoln Centre a bit early so we could find the box office to pick up our tickets, and to grab something to eat.

We saw Shows For Days at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre, starring Broadway star Patti LuPone and Michael Urie (from Ugly Betty).  You may also know Patti from Ugly Betty (Urie’s mom), or from Glee!

This play was one of the things Vivica and I were looking forward to the most on our trip. We are both huge Patti LuPone fans, and this was the first time the two of us would be able to see her in a show together.

And here’s a selfie with the poster… because we’re adults.

Our seats couldn’t have been better! We were in the second row, and the audience was raised while the stage was flat. So from our seats we were at eye level with the cast. It was perfect! It felt like a shared experience with the cast.

After the show, we went to the stage door in hopes of meeting Patti.

It was the last performance of the production, so most of the cast escaped through an alternate exit to head to the after party. But Patti LuPone came out to great everyone waiting!

We told her how we are from Canada and Brazil and have been trying to coordinate a trip together for years so we could come see one of her shows. She was so touched that she kindly took a photo with us, even after telling everyone she wasn’t taking photos that day.

Someone else asked if they could have a photo after us, and she said “I’m sorry, it’s just that they came all the way from Canada and Brazil!”

As she got in to her car, we waved goodbye, and she waved back calling out “Goodbye Brazil, Goodbye Canada!”

It was perfect.

We still had a bit of time before we were to meet Julia for dinner, and there was something I was dying to do.
So we headed back to Central Park.

I may have mentioned before that I love Doctor Who.  Are there any fellow Whovians reading this? If so, this is for you! Angels Take Manhattan is one of my favourite episodes from Matt Smith’s seasons. Especially because it takes place in New York! And of course because River Song is in that episode.

So here is one of the many great scenes from that episode:

And after a bit of hiking and climbing, we found it!

After we got a shot we were happy with, we headed back to Times Square for some dinner with Julia. All in all I think it was a pretty amazing day!
